A new study shows the drug Viagra will boost erectile dysfunction in men.
Viagra, the drug for erectile dysfunction, has been linked to an increase in the risk of heart attack and stroke in some users, according to researchers.
A total of 945,725 men aged 40-70 years who had a first heart attack in the past 12 months and a second one in the past year were randomised to one of the following drugs – sildenafil or tadalafil, the active ingredients in Viagra – or placebo. Viagra, the generic name for Viagra, had been available on the New Zealand market for almost two decades.
Researchers were able to use real-world data to find out the effects of Viagra on erectile function and blood pressure. The study looked at men who had been prescribed Viagra or sildenafil, or tadalafil, for one year or a drug-free period.
“It was very interesting to see that this drug could, on average, increase the risk of a heart attack in men who were already at high risk of the disease,” said lead author Dr John Smith, an associate professor of medicine at University of Newcastle.
“The results are interesting because these men were younger than the study participants, and they were at a greater risk of developing this disorder.”
Viagra has been linked to a number of cardiovascular diseases, including angina, heart attack, and stroke, with the use of the drug linked to an increased risk of all those events.
